Description

Instead of assembling a rigid lid, separate gasket and multiple soft inserts, an LSR overmolded tumbler lid can place selected silicone functions directly onto the plastic structure. The source design combines liquid silicone rubber with PC, PP or other engineering plastics through two-shot molding.

This approach is useful when the soft and hard regions must stay precisely located relative to one another. Sealing ribs, drinking interfaces and touch points can be integrated into the lid architecture, reducing the number of loose components that must be installed during final assembly.

Why Use Overmolding in a Tumbler Lid?

  • Material system: LSR + PC / PP / engineering plastics.
  • Process: two-shot injection molding.
  • Source functions include sealing, opening and flow control.
  • The product data lists a -40°C to 200°C temperature range.
  • FDA / LFGB certification is listed as an optional material requirement.

What to Define Before Tooling

For a reliable quotation and mold review, the silicone part should be specified together with the mating lid or cup geometry. The most useful project inputs are:

  • Rigid substrate resin
  • Silicone bonding area
  • Overmold thickness and sealing ribs
  • Gate/parting-line strategy
  • Food-contact and validation requirements

RFQ and Sample Review

For lid assemblies, a complete CAD stack-up is preferred because the silicone part interacts with rigid components, tolerances and moving mechanisms. Sample approval should be performed on the assembled lid.
